Mindful eating is the practice of cultivating an open-minded awareness of how the food we choose to eat affects one’s body, feelings, mind, and all that is around us. The practice enhances our understanding of what to eat, how to eat, how much to eat, and why we eat what we eat.

This understanding and insight is essential to ensure food sustainability for future generations, as we are motivated to choose foods that are not only good for our health, but also good for our planet. (Cheung & Nhat, 2011)

This awareness can solve the dissociation of the feeding process in which there is a psychological and emotional disconnection between what we think and feel with what we eat (Melanie Joy, 2013) . The fact of becoming more aware of the food process and its implications can not only help reduce the environmental impact that this dissociation implies, but also connect with the real needs of oneself.

This double aspect encourages a progress towards healthier and more sustainable eating habits but avoiding internal criticisms and impositions and moving towards connection and compassion.

As the director of GreenPeace claims, "“A new, diverse global movement is growing: one hungry for a better way of eating and producing food that is in tune with ourselves and the environment. Together, we can loosen the grip of industrial animal agriculture on our food system and build a healthier world for our generation and the next”.
